Sarah Yin heads to Solar Decathlon Design Challenge Final

This weekend Sarah Yin, Assistant Building Physics + Sustainability Engineer in Melbourne, is bound for Denver, Colorado, USA, to present at the finals of the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2023 Design Challenge.

Sarah, who is studying Materials, Energy and Science at Monash University, is a member of the Monash Solar Decathlon Team that will present their design titled “Office Building”. The design is for a sustainable, independent assisted living facility that feels much less like an institution, both in form and nature, and encourages a sense of community between residents and the society. The design focuses on accessibility for those with limited mobility while still encouraging autonomous living.

A total of 57 teams from 63 educational institutions have earned a spot in the final stage of the competition – finalists were selected based on their innovations, technical plans, and the quality of their presentations.

Sarah comments:

“I think the judges were impressed by our energy modelling as well as our design for flexible co-working spaces that are adapted for the post-pandemic world.”

Gregory Rice, Director | Sustainability – Australia + New Zealand, said:

“We are very excited for Sarah to have the experience of representing Monash and Australia, and of course Inhabit, at the Solar Decathlon Design Challenge Final. We wish her and her team great success.”
